Elvis Presley makes his second appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, where the host presents him with a Gold record for "Love Me Tender". The songs performed by Presley that night included "Don't Be Cruel", "Love Me Tender", and "Hound Dog".

Buddy Holly appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, where he lip-synched "It's So Easy" and "Heartbeat". It would be Holly's last major TV appearance.

It was on this day that Beatles manager Brian Epstein would later claim that a young British lad named Raymond Jones walked into his Liverpool record shop and asked for a song called "My Bonnie" by Tony Sheridan And The Beat Brothers, prompting him to track down the band and eventually sign them. Epstein's personal assistant, Alistair Taylor, would later say that he used the name of Jones (a regular customer) to order the single and paid the deposit himself, knowing that Epstein would notice it and order further copies.

The Star Club in Hamburg, Germany was the site of a historic Rock and Roll get together when The Beatles and Little Richard appeared for a two week engagement.

Capitol Records releases The Beach Boys' "Be True To Your School". The song features the tune to the University of Wisconsin's fight song, "On, Wisconsin!", although it was meant to be a tribute to Hawthorne High School, which the Wilson brothers attended. The single, along with its B-side, "Little Deuce Coupe", were the last two songs to include original member David Marks, in the 1960s.

The British Musicians Union declares that they are against BBC Radio continuously broadcasting Pop music.

Diana Ross And The Supremes' "Greatest Hits" started a five week run at #1 on the US album chart. Although original member Florence Ballard is pictured on the cover and sings on all the tracks, by the time the L.P. was released, she had been fired from the group and replaced by Cindy Birdsong.

The Guess Who's Billboard #10 hit, "Laughing" is certified Gold by the R.I.A.A.

The United States Council for World Affairs announces that it is adopting "Join Together" by The Who as its official theme.

Steve Perry makes his first concert appearance with Journey at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco. He would lead them to 17 Billboard Top 40 entries over the next ten years.

Warner Bros. Records releases the Neil Young compilation album, "Decade". A cross section of some of his finest work between 1966 and 1976, the LP would rise to #43 in the US and #46 in the UK. It would be certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1986.

Glam rocker Nick Gilder had the number 1 song in the US with "Hot Child in the City". It would prove to be his only hit record in America, although he had previously enjoyed a #1 smash in Canada with "Roxy Roller" while a member of the band Sweeney Todd.

While on tour with Meat Loaf, Wells Kelly, former drummer for the band Orleans, collapsed and died on the front steps of a London apartment building. A post mortem examination revealed high levels of morphine and cocaine in his body.

Kenny Rogers tosses a Frisbee into the crowd at the end of a show at the Adams Mark Hotel in Dallas, Texas, and the flying disc strikes a chandelier, showering a man named Kevin O'Toole with glass. O'Toole would launch a two million dollar lawsuit for the injuries he received. His wife also filed, claiming that she was deprived of her husband's "services, love, guidance, and companionship."

Former Pop star Gary Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was held in custody at a London police station for ten hours as he was quizzed by officers probing the sex abuse scandal sparked by late British TV entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile. From the early '70s until the mid-1980s, Glitter placed 18 songs in the UK Top 40.

Elvis Presley's latest album, "The Wonder Of You", set a new record for the artist with the most number one albums in the UK when it became the singer's 13th LP to top the chart. Previously Elvis and Madonna were tied with 12 number one albums each.

The late Tom Petty returned to the number one spot on Billboard's Top Rock Albums chart after his second solo LP, "Wildflowers" was reissued. Originally released in 1994, it sold over 44,000 units after being re-released two weeks earlier.

Whitney Houston posthumously became the first Black artist to have three albums certified Diamond in America. Her 1987 LP, "Whitney" joined her self-titled debut and 1992's "The Bodyguard" soundtrack in surpassing the equivalent of 10 million U.S. sales.

Jerry Lee Lewis, the legendary Rock 'n' Roll pioneer, passed away at the age of 87. After a string of six Billboard Top 40 hits, which included "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On" (#3), "Great Balls Of Fire" (#2) and "Breathless" (#7), he also enjoyed a long streak of Country And Western hits. In 1986, along with Elvis and Chuck Berry, he made the inaugural class of inductees for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and joined the Country Hall of Fame in 2022.
